I love going out in Humboldt because you will never find a crowd that is too cool to have fun. Arcata definitely has more of that scene - ATL and Humbrews are my favorites. If hiking, going to the beach and drinking good beer are some of your favorite things, Humboldt will probably be a great fit.įor our size, we attract some amazing musicians (though these shows tend to be mid-week since we are a good stopping point between SF and Portland). There is unlimited nature - beaches, forests, farmland, and rivers - Humboldt really has an unparalleled beauty. I think it is a fantastic place to find yourself. I have lived in Eureka and Arcata for 5 years, went to HSU, and now work full time here. I'm in my early 20s and could really use a good change of scene- is here a good place? If not, then where else? Nobody locks their doors it's an incredibly friendly place. You can leave 50$ sitting on your car seat and leave your doors unlocked and come back later to find it still there. We come from an area with little to no crime- I mean you can wander around our city at 10:30 on any given night and barely find a soul. I'm a musician (having a good art/music scene is important) and I'm looking to escape the lack of activity I've had in Midcoast Maine for years. It's looked real nice at a glance given that the cost of living is pretty similar to where we are right now, but after doing a bit of reading it seems like this place has some serious issues and I'm now beginning to reconsider.Ī little background, we're from Maine and are looking to start a new life, in short. If anyone has any information on last night’s crime, obviously call the Eureka Police Department.Girlfriend and I are taking a road trip and are planning on looking at the Humboldt County area to settle. Either way, OTC&C is taking steps to make their operation more secure in case the pilferer(s) return. Kunkler said she’s still not sure if someone entered through the side door - maybe someone hid in the building until after business hours, she theorized. She called around to local pawn shops to alert them of the break-in in case the burglar(s) tries to sell some the pricier items - she estimated the Bunn coffee grinder’s worth to be around $700. OTC&C’s other owner, Cathy Kunkler, was still trying to assess how much coffee was taken Thursday morning but guessed it was over $1,000 worth. This fridge was once full of wonderful beer … (The unsophisticated crook(s) left the wine, though.) Also, a lock on the door of a fridge in the back hallway had been pried off and much beer snagged. Another normally locked door to a room where coffee beans are roasted and stored. A back door to the building was wide open. When barista Aysha Melendrez arrived to open the shop this morning, she found many things not as they should be. “They stole our stuff with our own hand truck,” said OTC&C co-owner Gail Mentink. Oh, and a dolly which the owners assume was used to transport the items out the back door. Sometime after closing last night, Old Town Coffee and Chocolates in Eureka was broken into and numerous items were stolen including a commercial coffee grinder, a high end scale for weighing coffee beans, beer and approximately 200 pounds of bagged, roasted coffee beans.
